Megawide Foundation continued to fulfill its commitment to rehabilitate the Marikina Watershed through a tree-planting activity held last 24 August 2017. The Marikina Watershed is located in Brgy. Calawis, Antipolo, Rizal.
In partnership with Tulungan sa Kabuhayan ng Calawis and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), the largest business-led social development organization in the country, 26 volunteers planted 650 seedlings of fruit-bearing trees in a hectare (ha) of the Foundation’s 5-ha adopted area.
“We thank everyone for their support of the Marikina Watershed Rehabilitation Project. Through our efforts, we are helping mitigate the impact of climate change and therefore save the environment from the recurrence of natural disasters,” said Foundation President Maila Angela Ong. According to reports, the deforested upper Marikina Watershed contributed to the unprecedented flood levels in lower areas when Typhoon Ondoy struck in 2009.
The Megawide Foundation marker was also unveiled on site, in celebration of the Foundation’s 5th anniversary and Megawide’s 20th year.
The Marikina Watershed Rehabilitation Project was kicked-off last year as part of Megawide Foundation’s 4th anniversary celebration. The first hectare was planted in July 2016 by 29 volunteers. The remaining three hectares will be planted with more trees in the next few years under PBSP’s supervision.
